Enter God’s Rest Through Faith
Hebrews 4 continues the warning from chapter 3 by urging believers not to repeat Israel’s mistake of unbelief. The writer begins:
“Therefore, since a promise remains of entering His rest, let us fear lest any of you seem to have come short of it.” — Hebrews 4:1
Like Israel, the readers had heard God’s message.
“For indeed the gospel was preached to us as well as to them…” — Hebrews 4:2
Yet there was a crucial difference.
“…but the word which they heard did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in those who heard it.” — Hebrews 4:2
God’s promises must be received by faith if they are to benefit us. The writer then declares:
“For we who have believed do enter that rest…” — Hebrews 4:3
He reminds us that God’s own rest began after creation.
“And God rested on the seventh day from all His works.” — Hebrews 4:4
Since David later spoke again of God’s rest in Psalm 95, it is clear that the ultimate rest God offers is greater than simply entering Canaan.
Hebrews 4 reminds us that God’s rest is entered by faith, not by human effort. The peace, security, and assurance that God offers come through trusting His promises. Like Israel, we can hear God’s Word, but it only transforms our lives when we respond with believing hearts.
God’s Word Reveals the True Condition of the Heart
The writer now urges believers to persevere. He writes:
“Let us therefore be diligent to enter that rest, lest anyone fall according to the same example of disobedience.” — Hebrews 4:11
He then describes the extraordinary power of Scripture.
“For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword…” — Hebrews 4:12
God’s Word reaches where nothing else can. It is:
“…piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow…” — Hebrews 4:12
It also:
“…is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” — Hebrews 4:12
Nothing can be hidden from God.
“And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.” — Hebrews
